Michael, I am ashamed at you, we have the best government money can buy. Look at Mulrooney, who I call the teflon trout because nothign sticks to him and it all smells fishy.
We have 50% more per capita national debt than the USA and far less capacity to pay it down. Some say we can never pay it down unless we eliminate 75% of government and then cut the wages of those left by 50%. Too bad we have a broken democracy , no majority vote. just a plurality so all the politicos bribe the voters with their own money. Education is a joke. Over the past 40 years wages have gone up and performance has gone down(on the part of teachers) to the point where little John/jane can no longer think. Years of NDP schoolboard packing has done part of it. Now teaching is so well paid it attracts the worst people....greedy ones with no moral fiber or intelligence, just group tactics.
When will it end? In economic collapse. We now have flight of all professionals to the USA, all except lawyers I might add. I am fortunate that I can work in either place should it get really bad.

Canada is a commodity and process economy. What we sell sells in US$, like it or not. the price of a can $ floats and we could pay our workers $1000/hour as long as we could live with a dollar like the lira. Remember what generations of that did to Italy.
Unless we get some kind of representative government we are doomed.
In Toronto they just redid their taxes. Commercial is taxed at 7.5% and industrial at11.5% of assessed base. the assessed base is full resale value.
That is like a 11.5% permanent mortgage slapped on a manufacturing business and 7.5% on a retail store. Small storefrons(10-15 feet wide) see $1000 per month in taxes. Soon they will all be gone after the 5 year phase in is complete. they will all change to residential at 1.25% taxes. So the city will soon stop gloating as they all turn residential and where will the taxes come from then? Form residential and they will have no industrial or commercial to save them, they will all leave.
I expect this will change as the loss of all retail and manufaccturing in Toronto will be a killer. It is all caused by city greed. Businesses and industries have no votes at all. so lets kill them with taxes, we will stay in office anyway.
Toronto has a huge bloated overpaid work force. When the TTC does track work 50--75% of workers di nothing at all, they are in a featherbed as they say in the unions.
we are in worse shape than some asian countries. the fact they we cit trees, pump oil, and mine stuff we get for free has saved us for years. Now commodities are down and we will be toast.
