Japan government holds emergency security meeting

TOKYO, Sept 1 (Reuters) - Japanese cabinet members held a hastily called security meeting on Tuesday morning to discuss the North Korean ballistic missile launch toward Japan.

Among the participants were Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hiromu Nonaka, Defence Minister Fukushiro Nukaga and Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura.

''Prime Minister Obuchi called the meeting. He judged the meeting to be crucial from the standpoint of crisis management,'' a government official told reporters following the 10-minute meeting.

The official would not comment further.

North Korea on Monday test-fired a newly developed ballistic missile over Japanese sovereign territory for the first time, according to Japan's Defence Agency.
