? = 22,500.

YES, THE DIRECT approach is best. For while everything I said before is true - Russia's mess now threatens world capitalism and China comes out looking smart - none of it may matter to you. But there is one number all of us on this planet should bear in mind: 22,500. That is the number of nuclear weapons of various types the Russian military currently holds in its arsenals...

...I always rejected the oft-made comparisons between Russia today and the Weimar Republic, the weak, inflation-ridden post-war German state that paved the way for Hitler's rise to power. The main difference, as I saw it, was that postwar Germany was humiliated and abused by the victorious British and French, where post-Cold War Russia, whatever the economic similarities, was being invited to join the world economic community.
Today, I admit to doubts. Where is Russia's next line of credit going to come from? What Russian leader anytime soon will be able to win the respect around the world that the average Russian thirsts for? Neither Yeltsin, nor Chernomyrdin nor Zyuganov can escape the failures of their past. But Russia's right has no such baggage.
Remember that number: 22,500.
