But the judgement of one or the other as superior is necessarily subjective, and open to debate.

Superior to what? Kelly isn't talking about the superiority of either sytem, he is describing how Christianity and Gnosticism have radically differing views about the nature of matter and the meaning of history. The systems are incompatible, which is his point.
