Jonathan, true AAPL excitement - IBM delivers the 400MZ PowerPC
3/16/98 at Seybold NYC , S Jobs 1st demoed IBM's 400mz copper PowerPC and IBM is now making it in two models:
>> " IBM will ship two variations of its copper-enhanced 400 megahertz chip.
The PowerPC 750 features cache, which speeds up processing, and is targeted at desktop and mobile computers, and networking and telecommunications devices.
The cache-less PowerPC 740 is designed for handheld devices. " <<
Both use 58 % less power than the current 300mz , and IBM is expecting significant production :
>> " The copper chips and IBM's recently announced Silicon-On- Insulator technology will likely fuel double-digit sales growth in IBM's microelectronics division over the next 12 months, Doherty said. " <<
IBM now does about $3 to $4 billion/yr and it seems for the next year these 400 mz PowerPC are destined for AAPL :
>> " IBM's biggest customers initially for the copper chips will be Apple Computer Inc., analysts said
The chips should give Cupertino, California-based Apple ''the hottest, most sought-after workstations around,'' Doherty said, and shore up Apple in the desktop publishing market. " <<
Direct quotes from IBM's press release. Note the reference to the "desktop publishing market" considering there is a "server speed shoot-out" planned for Seybold.
Great news !
