I have not seen a figure for the upgrade - I don't know if Summit has
released a dollar amount, particularly since their complaint to the
FDA for the VISX machine was about unauthorized uses of the Visx
laser for operations not approved by the FDA. I don't think they would
want to quote a price for this unapproved use also. I do know that the
upgrade takes less than a full day to install, and I'll bet you a dime to
a dollar, it will not cost $200,000 to bring it up. Also, don't let the
sales fool you. Visx had a hell of a backlog of customers waiting for
approval of their machine, which they did not get until some time after
Summit. We will see what happens when that backlog is filled.
As for the fact of the doctors getting PO'ed, Summit says that is
easy. They will discount the machines to doctors and split the
fees from the operations. I want to see how long a doctor stays out
of the fold when they can get a discounted machine, or a machine
for no cost, and take a 30 / 70 split in their favor from fees charged.
Why would anyone go $500,000 in debt, and how would you
go up against a doctor without that debt who can charge less for
the operation because he has no laser payment to make.
I have followed this market for some time.
I now believe that there are German and Japanese machines that
are as good or better. The solid state Lasersight machine may be
able to compete soon. I still maintain that a glut of cheap machines
will leave Visx twisting in the wind with no other way to make money
