World opinion on Clinton/Lewinsky, from the International Herald Tribune:
''Is this an advanced form of democratic political conduct?'' the French foreign minister, Hubert Vedrine, mused the other day. It seems more like a kind of puritanical political persecution to the French, he said, or an outgrowth of isolationism.
John Biehl del Rio, chief of staff to President Eduardo Frei of Chile, said, ''Outside the United States, we do not give this issue the same importance. We are all praying, or at least crossing our fingers, that he is not hurt by this. The world faces a recession and the United States is holding the economy of the world together almost alone.''
...it is widely believed in many Islamic countries that Ms. Lewinsky was an Israeli agent placed in the White House. Without his troubles over her, some Palestinian and other Arab officials contend, Mr. Clinton might have been willing to single out Israel for not agreeing this year to an American proposal for a settlement about the West Bank.
Is this paranoia, or is the story actually getting interesting?
