When they start taking stock out from under the mattress, and have no brokerage account, IMO it's panic and time to buy. Much less dramatic than your couple with stock certificates showing up at Schwab to sell, but my wife placed an order to buy an S&P index mutual fund with Schwab near the end of the day yesterday (maybe a few days early; we shall see this week). Her "buy" order was so unusual that the Schwab representative made her verify several times that it was a "buy" and not a "sell"! He proceeded to tell her that NO ONE was buying.
