WinStar Expands Point-to-Multipoint Broadband Demonstration Network in Washington, D.C.

WINSTAR COMMUNICATIONS, INC. (NASDAQ - WCII) announced today that it has expanded its point-to-multipoint (PMP) fixed wireless broadband demonstration network carrying voice, data, video and other telecommunications services in Washington, D.C.
WinStar's recent progress includes the following:
-- The addition of a third hub site to the network's two existing sites; -- The increase of sectors over which the network provides high-speed telecommunications services from two to five; and -- The expansion of end-user buildings serviced by the network from four to eleven.

WinStar's full-duplex, ATM-based PMP demonstration network incorporates interconnected hub sites that provide high-speed telecommunications services to customer buildings located in different geographical sectors. The network offers unprecedented versatility, including enhanced voice, data, video conferencing, LAN-LAN interconnections, file transfer, MPEG-2 video, distance learning, email and high-speed Internet access. The network can provide multiple channels to each end-user building, and each channel will provide data rates of up to 250 megabits per second. This network design greatly increases the efficiency with which WinStar utilizes its spectrum.
The company is routing traffic through an ATM over-the-air interface, which is fully integrated with WinStar's ATM metropolitan area backbone network and its Class 4/5 Central Office Voice Network.
