I no longer live in the Bay Area, but I second the choice of Rubicon if you're looking to splurge a bit. The right combination of attentive but not overattentive service, an interesting menu and a very good wine list with affordable bottles.

My favorite for lunch used to be a little restaurant on Belden Place called Cafe Bastille, I think. Belden Place is an alley that runs from the street behind the Bank of America (i.e., not California Street). The restaurant, assuming I have the name right, has the genuine atmosphere of a Paris Bistro. Also the only restaurant I know in the USA that has andouillettes. Great pommes frites.

If you're up in Sonoma County - try Kenwood, but try it early in the week before it gets crowded leading up to the weekend.

What am I doing here when I could be off losing money like everybody else?
