In a global slowdown, the small cap can well closed down its door and go bankruptcy , but for large cap it is just a temporary slowdown. Once your are stable and large , have a dominate position in the market, it is very hard for you to be small again, look at MSFT, INTC, CSCO ...etc, but when you are still small, you have more chance to be sunk under the water. As to qntm, wdc, those are still counted as
small cap or middle cap comparing to IBM, MSFT, CSCO.
