(Dow Jones)--Hitachi America Ltd. will consolidate two American semiconductor units and lay off 650 employees in Texas and California. In a press release Tuesday, Hitachi said it will merge the Hitachi Semiconductor (America) Inc. and Hitachi Micro Systems Inc. units, creating an organization which will focus on the design, development and marketing of integrated semiconductor systems. The combined unit will employ about 370 people. As part of the consolidation, Hitachi closed its Irving, Texas, chip manufacturing and assembly plant, laying off 500 employees. Hitachi will also lay off 150 employees in California. Hitachi said the plant will be kept in a "ready state," while it considers alternatives. Hitachi blamed a protracted slump in its DRAM business for the plant closing, saying the facility would have required "substantial" investment to support non-memory leading edge technology.
