9/1/98 Japan's Nissan To Sell Fuel Cell Car That Runs On Methanol

TOKYO -- Nissan Motor Co. announced Tuesday that it plans to market a vehicle powered by a small fuel cell that runs on methanol, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported in its Wednesday morning edition. Developed by Ballard Power Systems Inc. (BLDPF) of Canada, the fuel cell powers the car's motor via a reaction between oxygen and hydrogen extracted from the methanol. Nissan hopes to begin selling the vehicles by 2003 to 2005.
The Japanese auto maker (NSANY) also unveiled a prototype of the vehicle, which is designed to help cut greenhouse-gas emissions, such as carbon dioxide. A lithium ion battery is used to recharge the fuel cell. Nissan also unveiled a prototype of a car that runs about 100 kilometers on three liters of fuel. The vehicle combines the chassis of a March subcompact and a newly developed direct-injection diesel engine.

Regards!

John~
