To me the modern catchall "attitude" need not denote bunghole-nature. While I suspect it is an ellipsis of the old malediction "a bad attitude", I'm wondering if it has grown beyond the strict pejorative intent. It can have a more benign meaning, sorta like "having an opinion and not being afraid to defend it". Often this becomes merely obstreperous, but every now and then it denotes the vanguard of an iconoclastic idea. Or something.
