I agree that Kai Tak was getting too crowded but landing there was a lot of fun and it was a short cab ride into town.

I think that HK is essential for China but is is not the same as London or New York. Hong Kong is the ultimate capitalist system and China is...well...capitalist as well but it doesn't like to shout about it. I think it would rather that Shanghai took over it's role and that HK became just another SAR.
