Oh taht. It's sort of a stifled snorting laugh. Phonetic. My other fav' is "hnyarf!" Gotta stay one step ahead of the Borg at the OED. Your verbal and phonetic distinctiveness* will be added to our own.

On the weighty topic of "being in denial." My take (after allowing for our modern love of psychobabble) is that "deny" denotes an action or decision. "Be in denial" is more of a chronic state.
The President denies having had sex etc. but
My wife is in denial about the direct causal link between attention to traffic and auto body integrity. or something! <gnrf!>

*Distinctiveness?! Anything wrong with "distinction?" ("distinction"? Penni?)
