GS, I just got around to reading your post from a few days ago. Again, very interesting ideas floating around in this neighborhood. Good stuff. You mentioned one thing that I have not read much about in a while, and that is a downward spiral in real estate. Isn't it interesting how there has been a lot of hype about "REITs" lately (real estate investment trusts)? I see articles on rag covers like Money while in line at the supermarket, and hear them yack on the CNBC squock box.

I'm not a REIT expert, but I think a lot of people got burned by REITs just after the 1987 crash. They were advertised as a safe haven, but most REIT portfolios got toasted worse than the stock market crash in 87 because they never recovered! Could there a be a repeat of this ahead?

I have heard that Pres. Clinton is warming up to a capital gains tax cut for sales of a primary residence. If it happens, do you think it might have a short term negative effect on real estate because sellers would not be as worried about the tax effects of selling? Hence, lots of houses on the market all of a sudden? Hence, lower prices? Ray J.
