Betty, I am glad you understand this. I have been a physician for twenty years and most people fail to see that they subsidize the medicare program through cost shifting. I hear physicians complain all the time that they are getting screwed by the health care insurance companies and Medicare. My reply is that if you are still seeing patients then they must be paying you enough. I do believe that reimbursement is close to the levels at which more and more people will desert the field. Medicine has attracted the best and the brightest because of the potential for high income, the chance to work with intellectually challenging colleagues and a sense of accomplishment. The long term result of this gradual socialization of medicine will be to drive these people from the field. I know that day will have arrived when doctors are required to take an annual proficiency test like teachers in many states do now.
