To all:

Here is a list of the security technologies that i think should be discussed together on this thread... so that everyone can understand how they overlap... and where things are headed.... and which companies are leading the way....

Digital Content protection.
Software Protection.
Software Metering and Licensing.
Encryption Software (algorithm development)
Encryption Hardware.
Firewalls, software (and trusted OS).
Firewalls, hardware, security, traffic shaping... etc.
Key management (Tokens/private key infratstucture vs public key.)
Smartcards
PKI infrastructure,
SSL, SET, and IPSec.
VPN's.

I hope that we can get some knowledgeable people here to help us discern fact from fiction in this fast-paced industry...

Here are some topics to start off with .. (topics that, IMO, are the most confused among investors)

1) encryption - there are various companies making far-flung claims about the security of their products and the potential they have in the commercial market... I think we need some real discussion on issues such as new algorithms, key length, vulnerability to hacks, and topics such as SSL, SET and IPsec.

2) How MSFT, INTC, and the other big players will eventually play into the industry and what does this mean for the little guys... Which companies will benefit, which will be bought, and which companies will be left behind.

3) Will smartcards succeed? What will the future of eCommerce look like?

4) What are the different roles of security software and hardware?

5) What is PKI and how does it work?

6) What new technologies look promising? Which ones look fraudulent...

If anyone would like to tackle some of these issues, please do... or if there are questions regarding them, or any of the technologies listed above (or related companies), feel free to ask, and I will do my best to provide an opinion. If I cannot give an educated answer, I will do my best to track down someone who can...
