Hi Travis: RE "638,500. A FAR cry from Eric's predicted 800,000 + (which I thought was right on the ball if not slightly conservative)"

Don't sweat it buddy. If anything the statement suggests that unit shipment is much higher than our conservative estimates. Let me explain.

First of all, I think back on July 7/8th (MW Expo) we've established that the term "G3" as used by Jobs refer to the "Pro" desktop systems and not just any system with a PowerPC 750 in it. Back then Jobs said that Apple shipped 750K+ of "G3s". Today he implied that we've shipped over 1 million. Thus between early July and now we've shipped 250K "Pro" systems. My target for the total of Pro units this quarter is around 320K. macevolution.com So with 25 days to go we would easily exceed that target. Furthermore Q3 actually ended on June 26 so if we're counting every bean, one would assume that between June 26 and Jul 7th Apple shipped some more units as well.

So on top of those 320K of Pros, we should have ~400K of iMac/AIO, and ~130K of laptops. So as long as the iMac numbers meets our expectation, 800+K this quarter should be pretty easy.

G3 "Pro" units shipped
Q1 133K per press release
Q2 ~295K estimated based on 750K comment by Jobs at MW minus Q3 and Q1
Q3 322K per conference call.
Q4 >250K so far based on 1000K-750K+(units between June 26-Jul 7th)
and we still have over 3 weeks in the quarter. Apple usually turn up unit shipment near the end of the quarter.

Anyway, I think the number Apple releases are just rough figures. As long as it seems to be in line with our estimates I wouldn't read too much into it.

Eric
