Some comparisons of today's action to the big turnaround day of 10/21/87 may be interesting
...................... 9/1/98 ............. 10/21/87
new lows/new highs ratio ...... 69 ...... 54
advances/declines ....... 1.65 ..... 8.36
up volume/down volume....... 3.08 .... 21.25
AS you can see by these preliminary figures, except for the number of new highs, today's recovery was anemic by 1987 standards. Of course no two different time periods are exactly comparable .A review of past similar declines indicates that investors usually are given a chance a bit later to buy at lower prices than those in existence at the end of the bounce back day (ie today)
