I don't think the article goes far enough. I don't know about you but I would like my internet connection speed to go up by a factor of a thousand. If I have a party I want to pick up a line up of dance tunes or picked for me and have high fidelity sound piped in for a small fee. I want my toaster connected to the internet. The infrastructure buildout is just getting started. Perhaps it's true that "The idea that the Internet in the year 2002 will be the successor to today's public communications network is no slam dunk" but only if something bigger and better comes around the bend.
