GTE Reaches More Customers with ADC's Soneplex Dual Repeater HDSL Solution

-- ADC's dual repeater solution extends T1 service delivery area to 36,000 feet, replacing up to seven standard repeaters used in traditional T1 deployments --

MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 1, 1998-- ADC Telecommunications, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADCT; www.adc.com), announced today GTE's approval of the Soneplex(R) dual repeater high bit rate digital subscriber line (HDSL) solution. Using ADC's dual repeater HDSL solution, GTE Network Services, a division of GTE Corp. [NYSE:GTE - news], is able to expand its T1-based service delivery area to 36,000 feet, allowing the company to reach more than 90 percent of its T1 customers. Initially deployed for trial in California, GTE will use the Soneplex dual repeater across all its markets.

The T1-based service delivery market is growing at 40 percent annually to meet demand for high capacity, ISDN-PRI, frame relay, Internet access and ATM services. Carriers like GTE are seeking to capture this growing market share and as a result are abandoning the old, repeated T1 delivery method employed since the 1970s, which required repeaters every 3,000 to 6,000 feet. With the incorporation of HDSL technology, ADC's dual repeater solution can replace up to seven standard repeaters. This results in reduced equipment costs, simplified engineering requirements and an expanded service area. HDSL technology leverages existing copper infrastructure -- without the need for repeaters or special line conditioning -- for the fast, efficient deployment of T1 lines.

''Our objective with the Soneplex dual repeater HDSL solution is to maximize our customer's return on investment by transforming the traditional T1 deployment process,'' said Bill Calk, program marketing manager for ADC's Business Broadband Group. ''Companies can quickly make a business case for using ADC's Soneplex intelligent service delivery platform because it immediately provides cost savings and performance efficiencies in carrier operations. We believe the Soneplex system is the lowest total-cost solution for carriers to grow their T1-based business services.''

The Soneplex platform includes integrated network management capabilities, providing local and remote operations, administration, maintenance and provisioning (OAM&P) support for centralized circuit visibility and control. Testing, monitoring and provisioning, using standard interfaces, help carriers provide reliable service at a low initial and ongoing operational cost.
