The short answer is, you can't. However, management is well aware of the danger of publishing misleading/incorrect numbers...companies that get caught at the year end audit and have to re-state quarterly numbers after-the-fact get absolutely *butchered* by the market. If you can't trust their numbers, you have no way to determine fair value for the company, so everybody bails.
