BEFORE THE BELL - CIENA slips

NEW YORK, Sept. 2 (Reuters) - Shares of CIENA Corp. slipped in pre-opening trade Wednesday after the company and Tellabs Inc. TLAB said they expected mid-November shareholder votes on their merger.

CIENA was down at 31-1/2 on the Instinet electronic trading system from a Tuesday closing price of 33-10/16. Tellabs rose slightly to 46-7/8 from a close of 46-8/16.

The companies said late Tuesday they hoped to hold meetings in mid-November to let stockholders vote on Tellabs' revised $4.7 billion proposal to buy CIENA.

Tellabs and CIENA had planned to hold the meetings Sept. 9. They rescheduled them to let shareholders weigh Tellabs' new offer.

Among other active issues, computer-related stocks inched higher. Dell Computer Corp. DELL was up at 109-1/4 from a close of 108-6/16.

Cisco Systems Inc. CSCO rose to 90-1/2 from a 90 close and Internet portal company Yahoo! Inc. YHOO was up at 73 from a close of 72-4/16.

Yahoo! said it had widened its global Internet bookselling deal with Amazon.com Inc. AMZN .

Auto maker Chrysler Corp. C rose to 50-3/8 f108 from a close of 50. Citicorp CCI was up at 108 from a close of 106-15/16.
