Dale, I had lunch with my friend at Iomega in Milpitas last Wensday and he told me the following: Production of Jaz drives has been terminated. The production group in Penang are currently refubishing the returned drives. They had a 25% return rate on Jaz2. They have enough returns to rebuild to keep them busy for several months.

Iomega marketing over projected the market for the Jaz drives just like SyQuest did. The remaining drive will be sold though OEM/VAR channels. Sony is using the Jaz1 in a video editing system. The do not want Jaz2. If all of this is true then Sony must be getting product from inventory.

Iomega has hires some new enginneers from HP to do a new 2GB single plattee, MR tecnology drive in Colorado. This drive is to take on Castlewood head to head. The Iomega managment is not concerned with Syquest.

The big question is will the 2GB MR products (both Iomega and Castlewood) do any better than the current products? My feeling is that it will only be sucessful if they look at markets other than the consumer PC business. Can the compete in the video recoding market? You can buy a complete VCD to connect to your TV for less than $200. What are these systems going to do is a lot of money in this market.

I will try to answer more questions.

Look for the IOM 2GB drive at Comdex in November.
