Could you and I decide how we would want "our" money invested in the market? Would you and I be able to vote "our" shares? The government ownership of industries is socialism or communism. Would you suggest we should "sell out" to assure an ever higher share price? Carried to an absolute end, this could mean a political apointee sitting on the board of GE.
