I found this report curious Network Associates Establishes Dominant Position in Security Market According to New Hurwitz Group Report. See the contenet at the bottom.
Network Associates is definitely a power house in the security business, but at what level. This report would lead you to believe they are the dominant player, but of course there are so many segments this market. Where is the real meat to NETA's strength.
One theory is that multiple areas of strength give power to the whole as you can offer a one stop solution versus a assembling a series of multiple vendor products. Surely, they dominate anti virus at the desk top, and have strong positions across the board.
So, what's the concensus thought here. Can Network Associates begin to take market share on this philosophy, or will leading players like Checkpoint establish a proprietary standard that will maintain their majority market share? Will a position here have a better chance of building the strongest entry to VPN security.
It would seem that this question would be especially important in the face of VPN. Imagine the nightmare of all the cross platform issues and managing them from a central location.
By the way, if plans to improve management from a central location being pushed by Microsoft, Intel and others are successful, will we see a central administrator make global security changes across the VPN enterprise and there by manage the problems of multiple vendor security products without great difficulty? Is this issue of central access going to open up security breaches that will be too scary to implement?
So, to sum it up, is bigger better?
Network Associates Establishes Dominant Position in Security Market According to New Hurwitz Group Report
Leading Industry Analyst Confirms Network Associates' Leadership Status in Both Revenue and Product Functionality
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Aug. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Network Associates, Inc. (Nasdaq: NETA - news) announced today that the Hurwitz Group, a leading analyst firm specializing in strategic enterprise applications, has released a research bulletin naming Network Associates as the leading security management vendor in the industry today. The report, titled ''Network Associates Establishes Dominant Position in Security Management,'' was released recently to Hurwitz Report corporate subscribers worldwide. The bulletin reviews recent acquisitions by Network Associates in the network security arena and examines their implications for customers and the market at large.
''Network Associates has quickly established itself as the clear leader in this market due to their possession of best-of-breed products in virtually every important security and network management product category,'' said Steven Foote, Senior Vice President at the Hurwitz Group. ''Other security management vendors are going to find it very difficult to compete with Network Associates' breadth of functionality and extensive distribution organization.''
The report confirms Network Associates' rapid rise to market leadership status in both overall revenue and scope of product functionality. It also projects a bright prospect of future growth, stating: ''The company's combined distribution organizations and alternate channels should be able to sustain an aggressively growing revenue stream for the foreseeable future.''
''This report confirms what we are hearing every day from our customers around the world,'' said Peter Watkins, General Manager for the Net Tools Secure division at Network Associates. ''Our customers are already seeing synergy between products that have only been under the same roof for a matter of months, and that development pace will continue. The market is beginning to realize that standalone point product vendors such as Check Point (Nasdaq: CHKPF - news), Symantec (Nasdaq: SYMC - news), ISS (Nasdaq: ISSX - news) or Entrust (Nasdaq: ENTU - news) will have a very difficult time providing solutions that actually work together to enforce a common corporate security policy.''
The Hurwitz report comes on the heels of the release of Network Associates' Gauntlet Active Firewall(TM) suite. Gauntlet Active Firewall, which began shipping on August 1, represents a significant step towards meeting increasing customer demand for true ''source code level'' integration between former point products such as firewalls, virus security, and intrusion protection. Gauntlet Active Firewall is part of Net Tools Secure, Network Associates' comprehensive network security suite. Net Tools Secure combines firewall protection with multi-tier virus security, encryption, digital certificate authentication, virtual private networking, intrusion detection, vulnerability assessment, and central security management. Network Associates security customers are also supported by the world-renowned NAI Labs which delivers rapid-response updates of the most recent hacker attack signatures, viruses, and hostile Java and ActiveX attacks.
