The long awaited True Confessions of The Humble One:

What a difference a fortnight makes.
On 8/18/98 portfolio gain since 1990 (nine years) was 34.6% yearly gain compounded yearly.
On 8/31/98 the portfolio gain since 1990 was reduced to a lowly 26.8% yearly compounded yearly.

So who gives a darm? The point that I want to make is that I really got clobbered. Too much margin can get you in trouble. Of course that's not the entire problem as we are all down quite a bit. It is so much fun to live on the edge, and the gains are so much greater. I think that it is called gambling. Between 8/18 and 8/31 my portfolio lost 41% of its value. As long as you have chips, you are still in the game.

Did anyone else have a lot of fun these last few weeks?
humble carl

Yes I am getting humbler. I think my wife is tickled pink, but she gets down from her high horse when I warn her that she may have to support us by being a checker at Woolworths.

Computations made on an HP80 vintage 1983 approx. Lets crank out the portfolio figures for fall of 1997 high point: 8 years at 52.3% annually compounded yearly. Such fond memories, but how could you ever spend all that? Truly a blessing that the market went down! <vbg>

I have enjoyed 'spilling my gut' and figure that you could have stopped reading if I were boring you.
