PRODUCT INFO / Samsung DVD 927 DVD player, $549
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

August 31, 1998 -- Samsung's second-generation DVD line includes uptown features at downtown prices. The DVD 927 is the flagship unit, featuring 10-bit video processing and a special audio section that has been enhanced with higher-end analog parts, upgraded amplifiers and a beefier power supply. According to the company, the result is audio performance that is noticeably superior to that of typical DVD players.

The 927 also features DVD-type component video output, unlike the RGB-type component output featured on the first-generation DVD 905. Other features include both coaxial and optical digital outputs, two sets of standard composite video outputs and an S-video output. In case you don't have a Dolby Digital receiver or decoder, the DVD 927 includes 6 analog outputs for amplifier connections.

The DVD 927 comes in a steel chassis with a cool anodized aluminum front, and to show off its audio stuff, will be bundled with a copy of the Chesky 96/24 DVD Audio Sampler. For about fifty bucks less, Samsung also sells the DVD 907 as more or less the same unit, only without the jazzed-up audio circuitry and with a plain casing. Both models are available in early September.

Price: $549 for the DVD 927, $499 for the DVD 907.
