Oil politics are starting to heat up again on several fronts. Around the world, key oil producing nations are having some political and
economic problems that could see supplies tighten. In Indonesia, there has been a return to the rioting that was present during the removal of
Suharto several weeks ago. On the Asian front, the deal between Unocal and the Taliban of Afghanistan appears to be in jeopardy. The deal
would have seen a $4.5 billion pipeline built by the two parties in order to carry oil from the Caspian Sea. Over in the Middle East, striking
workers are grinding down Yemen's oil production levels. This series of mini-crisis in key oil producing nations and regions could help lift
sagging oil prices in the short term, and may be a much needed catalyst for the start of a rally in petroleum stocks that have been beaten
down over the past year and a half.
