yeah, I expect 1999 to have tremendous global sales of modems.
Eventually, it will be the largest distribution of modems ever
world-wide.
Interesting that Eric B. was in China and got some deals going.
Basically, he got his foot in the door to a bunch of places.
Well, yesterday, my roommate who has been in Hong Kong for the
last 6 months came back for a few days. He speaks Chinese and
English and has a background in Networking and computers.
Anyway, he says that he is working on a Nation wide project in China
that will create an Internet-telephone system. This blew me
away. Only a place like China could mandate a nation-wide
project like that with 1 Billion people. He says China doesn't
have much money, but they are very crafty at creating deals
where they get the supplier to build the infrastructure and
have rights to the profits for the next 10 years or so.
Anyways, all I could think of was a China-wide internet system.
Since they don't have lots of money, they will have to use lots
and lots of inexpensive 56K modems. 3COM is the #1 networking company in China. It holds the most market share of any networking company.
Notice when Eric B. talks about SE Asia, and when John Chambers
talks about SE Asia. Big difference!! One sees a lot of immediate
potential, and the other sees that there needs to be a major
healing process before much business can be started over there.
Of course, got to focus on the next few quarters, but later
on, who knows what will happen.
