"Share buybacks, or normal course issuer bids allow companies to buy up to a certain percentage of their market float -- usually five to 10 percent -- when their share prices merit. The buybacks serve a dual purpose. When a company buys its own shares for cancellation, it is wagering that its stock price will improve in the foreseeable future, allowing it to issue new equity at higher prices."
