The following article in the Red Herring magazine
this last March is relevant to your discussion

The main point of the article seems to be that an
increasing portion of current switches functionality
has been integrated on silicon by ASIC companies,
so that the semiconductor companies are capturing
an increasing portion of the total value of
networking equipment sold by companies such as COMS,
BAY, etc...
