<<A letter from doctors at Newton General Hospital in Covington, Georgia, reported bladder infections in 15 of 100 women whose spouses received Viagra. >>

The letter does not indicate that there was actual documentation of infections. The specialty of the three authors is not mentioned but they are not members of the AUA. From this I would make the assumption that they are primary care docs. It is common practice in primary care not to culture community acquired, uncomplicated cases of cystitis. Irritative voiding after intercourse among a group of mostly older, probably post-menopausal women whose husbands have been impotent for some period of time would not be surprising. However, I can trust that the media will portray this as "Viagra causes infections".

Two letters deal with cardiac arrhythmias and ischemia during intercourse in three patients with known cardiac disease who took sildenafil and then had intercourse. The second letter refers to a study of Holter monitoring during intercourse (Am. J. Cardiol 1995;75:835-7) which showed that 31 percent of men with coronary disease had ischemia (note-none taking Viagra). Furthermore, among heart attack patients, 3% had had intercourse within 2 hours of the onset of symptoms and 9% within 24 hours of onset of symptoms(JAMA 1996;275:1405-9).

Physical exertion is a threat if you have lousy coronaries. But, I know, "Viagra kills". It is time for another rant from the fish man.
