Nikon said to be looking at loss for next year
TOKYO -- Nikon Corp. is expected to report a $35 million (5 billion yen) pre-tax loss for the fiscal year ending next March 31, 1999, according to a report today by SG Cowen, a New York investment analyst that follows the semiconductor and capital equipment industries. An estimate for net income for the year wasn't available.

If Nikon ends up in the red, it would be the company's first loss in six years. The SG Cowen report said Nikon's stepper revenue would be down 8% to $1.9 billion (270 billion yen) from last fiscal year.

The investment analyst estimated Nikon would ship 300 steppers this fiscal year, compared to 420 in the year ended March 31, 1998. SG Cowen also reported that Advantest Inc.'s pre-tax profits for the current fiscal year would be down 75% to $193 million (27 billion yen).
