A friend of mine offered a very plausible explanation for what happened on Monday that I haven't seen elsewhere. He thinks that mutual funds don't want to get caught looking bad at the end of the month so they all herd for the exits on the last day of the month (or conversely, if the market is going up on the last day, it will go up even further). Mutual funds statistics usually are captured on the last trading day of the month and they are all trying to look better than the next guy.

Monday night he predicted that the money has to get invested anyway and therefore a lot of it will come back in the market on Tuesday.

If he is accurate, then we should see swings being magnified on the last day of every month.
