As you implied, the 256 limit supposedly was fixed with MSW6.5. The fact that everybody is reporting different capacities before your system hit the wall seems to imply that the limiting factor is a data buffer somewhere. (WOW V4 had an 8-900 stock limit - they claimed due to the development tool they were using, but perhaps due to compilation setup limits.) Perhaps this is the same sort of thing.
