James,

Chiroscience has a strong patent position. Up to the end of February 1996, the Company had filed around 112 patents, with 42 covering single isomers, 40 covering novel drugs and 30 covering technology services. In the six months up to the end of August 1996 a further 30 new patent applications were made covering various aspects of their product pipeline and technology platforms.

There are a few companies working on MMP inhibitors, but Chiroscience is the first to enter the clinic with an MMP inhibitor for arthritis. British Biotech and Glaxo are jointly developing an MMPi for arthritis
which recently began Phase I trials. Chiroscience, therefore, has a lead of about 6-8 months on the competition.

Chiroscience has held talks with a number of major pharmaceutical companies regarding alliances on its various MMP inhibitors programmes. An alliance on the arthritis product is expected to be announced in the near future.

By the way, what biotechs, U.S. or otherwise, do you like the look of?

Regards,

James
