Basically, where you have electricity, you'll find television. It's insidious.

Even more insidious is that in many third world households, TVs take priority not just over telephones, but over refrigerators.

So the appliance buying order is not rational, but I doubt that computers would find a place in the home before necessities like telephones and fridges.

Ian: I couldn't find a link to that NY Times article that mentioned you, sorry. It was a summary article that talked about the reception of the iMac in Manhattan, at J&R and CompUSA. You were introduced as a weekend Apple specialist and quoted about 3/4 of the way down saying something positive about the iMac.
