VocalTec Teams With Excel On Internet Telephony
[All, this joint measure by VOCLF and XLSW is just another example of how emerging VoIP companies are hastening the convergence of their wares' operating capabilities with those of traditional PSTN/GSTN platform manufactures.
Excel, if you recall, is one of the preeminent programmable switch manufacturers, a class in which SUMA also falls, and although the article doesn't articulate this, the XLSW platform is entirely SS7 and IN ready. SUMA, if you recall, is in the process of being acquired by CSCO to satisfy their need in this space as well.
These measures are proof positive of the direction that the leading VoIP vendors are taking, and it does not look like they are entering a technology space that is devoid of traditional hooks. Quite to the contrary. In other words, there will be more of the old rules based elements (SS7 and Advanced information networking or AIN) in tomorrows architectures than one would have thought, even just recently. Comments?
Enjoy, and Regards, Frank C.]

HYANNIS, MASSACHUSETTS, U.S.A., Newsbytes via NewsEdge Corporation : VocalTec [VOCLF] today announced a pact with Excel Switching [XLSW] that represents the voice-over-IP (Internet protocol) specialists' second step in a strategy to move its products on to the "carrier grade" hardware used by telecommunications service providers.
In an interview with Newsbytes, VocalTec President, Chairman and CEO Elon Ganor noted that VocalTec's technology was originally used to enable PC board sets from hardware vendors like Dialogic for voice-over-IP (VoIP).
VocalTec then unveiled an agreement for similar enablement of carrier grade voice multiplexers from ECI Telecom, Newsbytes was told.
The deals with Excel and ECI are bringing greater "scalability" to VocalTec's voice over IP software platform, according to the company chief.
Excel, he asserted, is currently the market leader in carrier grade programmable switches, a type of switch that can be programmed to perform new and emerging telephony functions. Excel's "high density" programmable switches provide "many thousands of ports," Ganor maintained.
Also over the past couple of days, VocalTec has announced two other initiatives in the VoIP telecom arena, Newsbytes notes. VocalTec yesterday unveiled Internet Phone Lite, PC-based VoIP software billed as the first in the category to allow for custom branding by telecom carriers.
VocalTec today announced that Deutsche Telekom will be introducing a debit card service to telecom customers throughout Canada, associated with a pilot of VoIP the two companies plan to conduct in that country.
