Gymboree Reports August Sales
Increase 24% and Comp Sales
Increase 4%

BURLINGAME, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 3, 1998--The Gymboree Corporation
(NASDAQ:GYMB - news) reported net sales for the four week period ended August 29, 1998 of
$35.6 million, an increase of 24% from net sales of $28.8 million for the same period last year.
Comparable store sales for the four week period increased 4% compared to last year.

Net sales for the 30 weeks ended August 29, 1998 were $238.6 million, an increase of 28% from
net sales of $185.7 million for the same period last year. Comparable store sales for the 30 week
period increased 7% compared to last year.

The Gymboree Corporation designs, manufactures, and retails unique, high quality apparel and
accessories for children from birth to seven years of age. The Company operates 509 stores which
includes 482 stores in the U.S., 13 stores in Canada, and 14 stores in Europe. The Company also
offers directed parent-child developmental play programs at over 390 franchised and company
operated centers.
