SkyTel Predicts Accelerating Reseller Activity
AT&T AlphaTrack Service Latest Addition to Resale Lineup
JACKSON, Miss.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 18, 1998--The announcement Monday of AT&T's AlphaTrack service is viewed by SkyTel (NASDAQ: SKYT - news) as an indicator of the accelerating activity that can be expected with the recent release of smaller advanced messaging devices.
''While agreements have been in place for some time with all major carriers, many carriers were waiting for the new compact devices,'' stated Calvin C. LaRoche, senior vice president for SkyTel's wholesale division. ''The announced campaigns and introductions over the past week by PageNet and AT&T confirm that they also believe the market will respond strongly to the new products.''
SkyTel operates the only nationwide advanced messaging network in the United States. AT&T Wireless Services and more than 35 other carriers are actively selling advanced services from the SkyTel platform. In total, more than 100 companies have signed reselling agreements with SkyTel and will offer the new advanced messaging devices.
Over the past few months, Glenayre and Motorola have completed development of four new advanced messaging devices. Three of the pagers rival traditional one-way text devices in size. The fourth, Motorola's PageWriter 2000, offers full keyboard entry and a 14-line screen.
''The size and performance of these new devices represents the next generation of paging that will spur increasing market acceptance and growth,'' said John T. Stupka, SkyTel president and CEO.
