No, Bill, as I explained in great detail, the source for the Bush-Fitzgerald affair was more than a book footnote. In fact I did not know of any book footnote and a footnote was not the basis of the information that the Dukakis campaign had (that may have come out later after I lost interest in running down Bush rumors). During this whole thing (summer of 1988), Craig Fuller (of the Bush campaign) was running the show and he was on the phone with the press every day that summer begging them not to run with this story because he argued that it was not in the public realm. (Candidly, Dukakis people were on the other side prodding the press to go with it.) When Fuller heard NBC was about to report it, he went to ballistic, and we in the Dukakis campaign always thought he somehow used connections in the executive suite at GE to kill the story. This was well-known by the press corps and the within both campaigns, but it never got the currency that Lewinsky does today.

Doughboy.
