No one is sure. Most good traders don't jump into every upgrade or news story. Yes, ELNK, MSPG, and yes AXNT were all on upgrades and they did fine. At least they did fine for me. YHOO got upgraded towards late afternoon and it started up even though the stock was pretty much on a downtrend before. Whoever would have shorted those would have remained holding their shorts in their hands. But if I have to choose between an upgrade on an good earnings report, I'd take the earnings report.

Perhaps there are no clear and set rules and different stocks react differently according to if their sector is in favor, their technical situation, if they are overvalued, and even how long you plan to hold that trade.

I've seen upgrades that go unnoticed in a bad market climate only to advance the next day. To just say an upgrade is an automatic short is to miss the potential of an upgrade. There are no set rules in this game... just like there is no one strategy.
