The ONLY conclusion I have so far is that NOBODY KNOWS how much MC is being used in production of paint strippers. It seems that both of Gino's sources give quite different data.

The one I used for my cursory calculations indicates:
129,000 mT total production of MC within USA, 30% which is used in paint strippers. Therefore [129,000 mT] * [0.3] = 38,700 mT.

The second source indicates 136.85 million lbs of MC used in manufacturing paint strippers, this converts to 62,000 mT. What geographical area does this number apply to, are the numbers from both sources comparable?

Obviously 38,700 vs. 62,700 mT is quite different, but at least not by orders of magnitude. The first number is for year of 1996, and the second represents 1990. I remind you all once again that my cursory estimate calculations were based on the more recent and smaller number of the two (conservatively rated), which indicates MC paint stripper use within the USA market. May we look deeper and say that MC production in paint stripper products may have decreased because of increased legislation and OHSA concerns? With a bit more data, I think that we may be able to.

Gino, can you say what geographical area the 1990 numbers represent? Have you found any year-over-year comparisons outlining how much MC is used to produce paint stripper products? Thanks for your continued excellent research efforts.
