Yet more great news for Rambus

More DRAM capacity being shut down. Oh yeah. Get ready for a dearth of product, higher prices, and Rambus going to the moon . . .

Fujitsu May Close Computer Chip Plant in U.K. Amid
Decline in Chip Prices

Fujitsu Ltd. Considers Closing Computer Chip Plant in Britain

Tokyo, Sept. 4 (Bloomberg) -- Fujitsu Ltd., Japan's largest computer maker,
is considering closing its only chipmaking factory in England as a market glut
continues to pull down prices of dynamic random-access memory chips,
public relations manager Yuri Momomoto said.

The company will gather workers at the plant in Newton Aycliffe, County
Durham, at noon local time today to make an ''important announcement,'' the
company said.

The Guardian newspaper reported yesterday the company will close the
500-million-pound ($815 million) factory with a loss of almost 600 jobs.

Trade Minister Peter Mandelson held crisis talks with Fujitsu as anxious
Labour Party MPs demanded a change of economic policy to protect
struggling industrial areas, the Guardian said, without citing sources.

Fujitsu may now have to repay U.K. government grants, said to total 100
million pounds, which were instrumental in bringing the company to the area,
the paper reported.

The U.K. plant, which now makes 16-megabit DRAM chips, isn't making
much money because of falling prices, the company said.

The move is part of the company's plan to reduce production of 16-DRAMs,
said spokesman Isao Hirao.

Fujitsu shares in Tokyo fell as much as 45 yen, or 3.31 percent, to 1,327
yen.
