Fujitsu considering closing UK microchip plant

TOKYO (AFX-ASIA) - Fujitsu Ltd said it is considering closing a microchip
production plant in the UK due to the stagnant dynamic random access memory
(DRAM) chip market.
Fujitsu said it will make a final decision on this later today.
"It is true that we are considering the closure of the plant," an
official said. "We are scheduled to meet with the employees at noon local
(UK) time, and by then we will make the final decision, whether we will close
it."
The plant under question is at Darlington, noerthern Engaland.
The Fujitsu spokeswoman said the move is due to the stagnant microchip
sector, with the UK plant producing mostly 16 megabit DRAM chips, with
monthly output of 1.5 mln units, along with 4M DRAM chips.
Fujitsu built the plant in 1991 at a cost of 400 mln stg.
