I agree with the comment about "contrite and humble heart." Indeed, Jesus began his sermon on the amount with:

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of
heaven (Matt 5:3).

The "poor in spirit" are those who understand they cannot achieve salvation of their own accord (as opposed to the "proud of spirit" who think they can/must do it on their own). We come to God because of that realization.

And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and that life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life (1 John 5:11-12).
