"I was raised in the Church of Christ, baptized at 12, thought I
had to attend church every time doors opened, and did my best to be a good Christian."

That's where the delusion started Sam. I also grew up in a Christian home and tried to do my best to be a good Christian. Every Commandment was carefully studied, but I couldn't put them into practice. When I entered my teens, the frustaration of my sinfulness overwhelmed me. I failed miserably and concluded during my early college years that Christianity must be false because I could not appropriate the life that it promised. I didn't know that the Risen Christ living in us was inteded to be the norm of the Christian life.
He gives the power to live the Crucified life and be risen with Christ in the newness of a righteous life. The righteouness that I so desired as a youth was a gift given to the Christian by simple faith in Jesus.
The moral failings that we experienced clouded our hearts and led us away from the only true light into the darkness of Satan. Do not be deceived, the reality of the Christian life is available, not through "doing our best to be a good Christian" but through surrendering to Jesus and letting him do in us what we cannot do for ourselves. The very purpose of the Commandments that lead us to attempt to lead a good life is to make us aware of our inability to do so and our need for true Christianity---Jesus Christ.

Christ is real and available to those who have humble and contrite hearts. You need to reread the New Testament accounts with an open humble heart.

May your heart be receptive to the reality of Christ that you missed in your youth.
